Abstract

This chapter describes a wide range of applications of various in vivo sampling techniques used mainly in the biomedical research, including studies focused on the monitoring of the level of drugs, targeted analysis of endogenous metabolites and untargeted metabolomic profiling. The fundamentals and unique features of microdialysis (MD), solid-phase microextraction (SPME), and ambient ionization mass spectrometry (MS) techniques for in vivo use, namely rapid evaporative ionization mass spectrometry (REIMS) and the intelligent Knife (iKnife), the MasSpec Pen, the SpiderMass, the picosecond infrared laser (PIRL), are scrutiny described. In addition, the aspects related to the application of each sampling in pharmaceutical analysis and also in medical and clinical studies are described. The reader can find several information about diverse solutions and sampling strategies adjusted to demanding conditions, such as on site sampling at the surgery room, that are used in clinical practice. Finally, the authors discuss the advantages, but also current limitations of particular sampling techniques, and also present future perspectives of in vivo devices in the area of bioanalysis and medical diagnostics.
